Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Arabic أَذَان (ʾaḏān).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

adhan (plural adhans)

  1. (Islam) The call to prayer, which originally consisted of simply four takbirs followed by the statement لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله (lā ʾilāha ʾillā llāh) (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ)‏ ((ʾašhadu ʾan)).
If one prays alone, then no adhan is needed.
