Etymology[edit]

Pseudo-Germanism, possibly derived from obsolete German ankeilen (to secure something with a wedge) or now chiefly colloquial Austrian German ankeilen (to accost someone in order to sell them something). It is unclear how the term acquired its present meaning in Dutch.
