Etymology

From a- + Latin noctēscere, present active infinitive of noctēscō (I grow towards night, grow dark), from nox, noctis (night), or from a- +‎ noche +‎ -ecer. Compare Asturian anochecer, Extremaduran anochecel, Galician anoitecer, Leonese anuchecere, anochecere, Mirandese anuitecer, Portuguese anoitecer.
