From Old Portuguese anoitecer, from a- +‎ noite +‎ -ecer, or from a- + Latin noctēscere, present active infinitive of noctēscō (I grow towards night, grow dark), from nox, noctis (“night”). Compare Galician anoitecer, Spanish anochecer.
