From Middle English brydgrome , bridegome , from Old English brȳdguma , from Proto-Germanic *brūdigumô , equivalent to Old English brȳd ( “ bride ” ) + guma ( “ man ” ) ; see groom for more. Compare Saterland Frisian Brüüdicham , Dutch bruidegom , German Bräutigam , Norwegian and Danish brudgom .
