From Proto-Slavic *bȏrnь[1], from Proto-Balto-Slavic *barˀnís[1], from Proto-Indo-European *bʰorH-n-i-[1]. Cognate with Upper Sorbian bróń[1].

Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bȏrnь[1][2], from Proto-Balto-Slavic *barˀnís[2], from Proto-Indo-European *bʰorH-n-i-[2]. Cognate with Lower Sorbian broń[2] and Lithuanian bar̃nis (“quarrel”)[1][2]. See also Old Polish brodło (“haystack”). Direct meaning: something that can be used for defence (see bronić).
