Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 袈裟, Literary Chinese 袈裟 (jiāshā), transcribed from Sanskrit काषाय (kāṣāya). The Chinese characters were phonetically derived from Middle Chinese 加 (kˠa) and Middle Chinese 沙 compounding with Literary Chinese 衣 (“garment”).

     Thứ nhất, cà sa xuất phát từ chữ 𣮫㲚 thời nhà Hán - phiên âm từ chữ काषाय (kāṣāya) trong Phạn ngữ. Đến đời nhà Tấn, đạo sĩ Cát Hồng (葛洪,283 - 343) đã đổi thành 袈裟 (cà sa) trong quyển Tự Uyển (字苑) rồi trở thành từ chuẩn mực cho đến ngày nay.

     First, cà sa derives from 𣮫㲚, which is dated to the Han dynasty and was transcribed from काषाय (kāṣāya) in Sanskrit. By the Jin dynasty, the Taoist Ge Hong (葛洪, 283-343) changed the spelling to 袈裟 in the Ziyuan (字苑) and solidified it ever since.]

Usage notes

As a regular Sino-Vietnamese word, the unhyphenated spelling is expected as hyphenated spellings are outdated for all native and Sino-Vietnamese words. The hyphenated spelling is also used rather inconsistently even in Buddhist sources.
