From Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (tight; narrow), possibly from Middle Chinese (MC heap, “narrow”) (which became Doublet of kẹp). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຄັບ (khap), ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p), Zuojiang Zhuang kaep, Thai คับ (káp).
