Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *tʃ-r-eː, the infixed nominal derivative of Proto-Vietic *tʃeː (to grind) (whence modern xay (to grind)). Cognate with Muong Bi khày, Proto-Katuic *ʔndree (whence Pacoh ntray), Khasi synrei, Khmer អង្រែ (ʼɑngrɛɛ), Riang tᵊnrɛʔ¹, Hu ŋʁíʔ, Semai renééq.
