Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek χοαχύτης (khoakhútēs), from χοή (khoḗ, libation to the dead) + χέω (khéō, to pour), a calque of Egyptian wꜣḥ mw (literally water-pourer), from the participle of wꜣḥ (to apply) + mw (water).
