Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from the Middle Low German compound dumdrīste, in which dum (dumm) did not mean "stupid" but rather "reckless". Later interpreted more literally as dumm +‎ dreist, literally dumb-brash.

  1. audacious, reckless (impudent, stupid, inappropriate through lacking consideration); generally of speech or social behaviour, not dangerous acts
    Es war schon dummdreist, den Richter in der Pause zu fragen, was ein Freispruch kosten würde.
    It was audacious to ask the judge during the break how much it would cost to be acquitted.
