Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *argaz. Cognate with Old Frisian erch (West Frisian erg), Middle Low Middle Low German arch (Dutch erg), Old High German arg (German arg (bad)), Old Norse argr (Icelandic argur (angry)). Outside Germanic, cognate to Albanian jargë (spit, phlegm).
