From Ottoman Turkish اكشیمك (ekşimek, to turn sour, become acid, become disagreeable or cross), from Proto-Turkic *ekši- (to be sour, bitter).[1]

Cognate with Chagatai [script needed] (ekşimek, to be sour), Turkmen egşitmek.
