From Middle High German vrüeje, vrüe, from Old High German fruoji, from Proto-Germanic *frōwijaz, alternative form of Proto-Germanic *frōwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *proh₁- (early). Compare *per (forward). The corresponding adverb was Middle High German vruo, Old High German fruo. Cognate with Dutch vroeg and Ancient Greek πρωΐ (prōḯ).
