13th century. From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese gastar, from Latin vastāre under the influence of the descendants of Proto-Germanic *wōstijaz (“waste”). Compare Portuguese gastar, Spanish gastar, Italian guastare (“to spoil”).
