[edit]- (Northern Vietnam, coastal dialects, probably obsolete) lở
- (originally Central Vietnam, Southern Vietnam, now widely used) trở
Etymology
[edit]Doublet of trở in modern written Vietnamese.
Originally the (inland) Northern form (see giai for the sound change), now widely used in the written language. In the meaning "to turn, to change", its usage has been eclipsed by the Central-Southern form trở.
Attested in Phật thuyết đại báo phụ mẫu ân trọng kinh (佛說大報父母恩重經) as ⿰呂巴, composed of 巴 (MC pae) + 呂 (MC ljoX) (modern SV: ba lã) and 呂 (MC ljoX) (modern SV: lã).
