Etymology

[edit]

From *yuşn (>*yuhn etc), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yúHs. Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬏𐬲𐬆𐬨 (yūžəm), Sanskrit यूयम् (yūyám), English you.

The oblique form we or hewe descend from *ewe < *ewa, which is a shortening of *êwa (compare *ema < *êma which became em (we) and me (us)); for more information thereon see ئێوە (êwe).
