Etymology[edit]

From Indo-Portuguese jágara, jagra, from Kannada ಶರ್ಕರೆ (śarkare), Urdu شکر (shakkar), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā) (hence ultimately cognate to English sugar).
