Cognate with Icelandic kýli (“wen, boil”), Swedish kula (“boil, bulge; pit”), Danish kule (“boil, bump; pit”), German Keule (“club”), German Kuhle (“hollow”), Dutch kuil (“pit, hole”). Distant doublet of keel, q.v.
