[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Low German kōte, kāte (“hut”), from Proto-Germanic *kutǭ ~ *kutą. Cognate with German Kate. Compare also Norwegian Nynorsk kote, Swedish kåta, which are partially from the same word and partially from Proto-Samic *koatē.

- kåte (non-standard spelling)
Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Norse kota, probably from a confluence of:
- Middle Low German kāte, kōte (“hut”), from Proto-Germanic *kutǭ ~ *kutą; compare German Kate.
- A derivative of Proto-Samic *koatē, from Proto-Uralic *kota; compare Southern Sami gåetie.
Whether and how the two terms may be ultimately interrelated is a debated question. Compare Swedish kåta.
Noun
