Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Low German kōte, kāte (hut), from Proto-Germanic *kutǭ ~ *kutą. Cognate with German Kate. Compare also Norwegian Nynorsk kote, Swedish kåta, which are partially from the same word and partially from Proto-Samic *koatē.

  • kotto (dialectal, south-western Trøndelag)
  • kuttu (dialectal, south-eastern Trøndelag)
  • kåte (non-standard spelling)

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Norse kota, probably from a confluence of:

  1. Middle Low German kāte, kōte (hut), from Proto-Germanic *kutǭ ~ *kutą; compare German Kate.
  2. A derivative of Proto-Samic *koatē, from Proto-Uralic *kota; compare Southern Sami gåetie.

Whether and how the two terms may be ultimately interrelated is a debated question. Compare Swedish kåta.
