moraxella (plural moraxellas or moraxellae)

  1. (bacteriology) Any of several short rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Moraxella (under family Moraxellaceae) which includes the causative agent (Moraxella lacunata) of catarrhal conjunctivitis; the bacterium inhabits the mucous membranes of mammals and causes infections of the middle ear, respiratory tract, and conjunctiva.
