Etymology[edit]
According to the Vocabulario de la lengua tagala (1860), the variant pungkahi is the same with pungka, which is said to be of Chinese origin. Possibly from Hokkien 旁敲 (pông-khà, “sidestrike”) according to Manuel (1948).
