Etymology

Via some other European language, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin ontologia, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ὤν (ṓn, on), present participle of εἰμί (eimí, being, existing, essence), and λόγος (lógos, study of), with the suffix -ia (Latvian -ija).
