rib cage (plural rib cages)

  1. (anatomy) A part of the skeleton within the thoracic area consisting of ribs, sternum and thoracic vertebrae.
  2. The enclosed area created by and within the ribs.



Usage notes[edit]

  • In medicine, the space within the rib cage of living being is usually referred to as a cavity: chest (cavity) or thoracic cavity when it includes the entire thorax, and pleural cavity when referring to the area surrounding the lungs.
