Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch riten, from Old Dutch *rītan, from Proto-Germanic *hrītaną. Cognate with Old Saxon hrītan, Old Swedish hrīta, and with s-mobile also dialectal German schrissen, schreissen, Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐍃𐍃𐌺𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 ‎(disskreitan). Possibly also cognate with Old English wrītan (English write), Old Saxon wrītan, Old High German rīzan (German reißen), Old Norse ríta (Norwegian rita). Compare also Old Armenian գիր ‎(gir).
