From Proto-Vietic *k-roːŋʔ (back of the blade), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruŋʔ ~ *ruuŋ() ~ *ruəŋ() (ridge; spine; back); cognate with North Central Vietnamese trống, Bahnar rŏng (behind, in back of).
