Etymology

From Middle Dutch schimmel (“rust”), from Proto-Germanic *skimla-, probably related to *skīnaną (“to shine”), referring to the dull shine of a fungal layer or its white color.

Cognate with German Schimmel, whence is borrowed the sense “grey horse” (due to the similar colour).
