From Proto-Germanic *starkaz. Cognate with Old High German stark (German stark), Old Norse sterkr (Swedish stark, Danish stærk, Norwegian Bokmål sterk), reconstructed Gothic *𐍃𐍄𐌰𐍂𐌺𐍃 (*starks, strong)[1].
