[edit]tavu
Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]tavata (“to spell”) + -u. Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot in 1835; the earlier forms were tavuu (with -uu) and tavut (with -ut). The computing sense is from the 20th century, perhaps because multiple bytes make up a 'word'.
