Etymology

Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to tie, string; rope) which is ultimately cognate with Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to turn, bend) whence the two meanings of the verb.[1]

  1. to open (atvērt)
  2. to close (aizvērt)
  3. to string (for example, beads, mushrooms for drying, etc.)
  4. to thread a needle (ievērt)
