Etymology

Mid-17th century, from Dutch waarschijnlijk (1540), itself a loan translation of French vraisemblable and/or Latin verisimilis (probable). Analysable as wahr (true) +‎ scheinen (to seem) +‎ -lich (-ly), thus “trueseemly, trueseeming”. Cognate to German Low German wohrschynlik.
