From Proto-Slavic *vě̀jati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wḗh₁ti, from *h₂weh₁-. Cognate to German wehen, Ancient Greek ἄημι (áēmi), Sanskrit वाति (vā́ti) and Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌(iti).
