From Middle Dutch wijc, from Old Dutch *wīk, from Proto-Germanic *wīkō, from Latin vīcus (village), from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱ- (village, household). Cognate to English wick, -wich, -wick, archaic German Weich- in Weichbild (municipal area). Compare Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐍃 (weihs), from Proto-Germanic *wīhsą (village, settlement) of the same Proto-Indo-European root.
