From Proto-Slavic *obědъ, from *o(b)- + *ěd-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ebʰi + *h₁ed-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian wobjed, Polish obiad, Czech oběd, Serbo-Croatian obed, and Russian обе́д (obéd).
