Etymology
From Middle Dutch seehont. Synchronically equivalent to zee (“sea”) + hond (“hound, dog”).
Middle Dutch seehont, is possibly an alteration of seelhont (literally “seal-hound, seal-dog”), from seel (“seal”), from Proto-Germanic *selhaz. Compare Low German Saalhund (“seal”).
