Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek βιάζω (biázō, to use violence, to force). The forced sexual intercourse sense is from Byzantine Greek[1] and a semantic loan from French violer.[2]

Inherited from Byzantine Greek βιάζω (biázō), from Ancient Greek βιάζω (biázō, use violence, force). Sense "in a hurry" is medieval, especially from the passive voice βιάζομαι (viázomai).[3]
