Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kürgek (shovel), a development of *küre- (to rake), whence كوره‌مك (küremek, to rake). Cognate with Azerbaijani kürək, Bashkir көрәк (körək), Kazakh күрек (kürek), Kyrgyz күрөк (kürök), Uzbek kurak and Yakut күрдьэх (kürjeq).
