The name of a [[province]] in ancient Japan, this appears in the oldest records of the 600s,<ref name="SDH"/> and again later in the ''{{w|Kojiki}}'' of 712 {{CE}},<ref name="Brit"/> as {{m|ja||三野国|tr=Mino no kuni|lit=[[three]] + [[farm]]/[[field]] + [['s]] + [[province]]}},<ref name="SDH"/> apparently because the region had three large farms.  This shifted to {{m|ja||御野国|tr=Mino no kuni|lit=[[honorable]] + farm/field + 's + province}}, by roughly 702 {{CE}},<ref name="SDH"/> then a few years later in roughly 708 {{CE}} the spelling was officially changed to {{m|ja||美濃国|tr=Mino no kuni|lit=[[beautiful]] + [[rich]]/[[concentrated]] + 's + province}},<ref name="SDH"/> with this spelling then later becoming the only one.
