From Old Armenian սուր (sur), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱōro-, grown from *ḱō- (“to sharpen”). Cognates include Sanskrit शूल (śū'la, “any sharp instrument or pointed dart, lance, pike, spear”), Persian سان (sān, “whetstone”), Latin cōs (“whetstone”), catus (“clever, shrewd”).
