Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *káwpas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *káwpas, from Proto-Indo-European *kwep- (“to smoke, boil”). Cognate with Ancient Greek καπνός (kapnós, “smoke”), Latin vapor (“steam”), Old English hopa (whence English hope). The Sanskrit root is कुप् (kup, “to be agitated, to boil with rage”).
