simp. (毕业) | 毕 | 业 |
Etymology[edit]
The Japanese entertainment/fandom slang meaning of "to graduate (to leave a group)" is a Semantic loan from Japanese 卒業 (sotsugyō).
Pronunciation[edit]
Verb[edit]
畢⫽業 (verb-object) (intransitive)
- to graduate; to finish school
- (Japanese entertainment fandom slang) to graduate (to leave a group)
- (figurative, business) to quit [a job]; to be fired
Usage notes[edit]
Unlike its English equivalent graduate, 畢業/毕业 (bìyè) implies not only an event but a state. Note the following example sentence:
我畢業兩年了。/我毕业两年了。 ― Wǒ bìyè liǎng nián le. ― I graduated two years ago.
Literally: "I have graduated for two years."
