grapes grapes tooth; ivory
simp. and trad.
(葡萄牙)

Etymology[edit]

From Portuguese Portugal or Latin Portugallia, possibly via Min Nan 葡萄牙, dialectal POJ Pô-tô-gâ. The selection of characters for the phonetic transcription (葡萄, "grape" + , "tooth") alludes to the importance, to the early Portuguese missionaries who visited China, of viniculture to make sacramental wine (葡萄酒, "grape alcohol").

Compare 西班牙 ("Spain").
