From Old Galician-Portuguese arvor, from Latin arbor, arbōrem, from Latin arbōs, arbōsis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃erdʰ- (high, to grow).

Cognate with Galician árbore, Spanish árbol, Catalan arbre, Occitan arbre, French arbre, Italian albero and Romanian arbore.
