Learned borrowing from Koine Greek καταφθάνω (fall upon unawares; pay in advance). The form καταφτάνω (kataftáno), since Mediaeval times. By surface analysis, κατα- (completely) +‎ φθάνω (arrive).[1] Doublet of καταφτάνω (kataftáno).
