[edit]From Byzantine Greek κουτσός (koutsós), of uncertain etymology. Likely from Middle Bulgarian коуцъ (kucŭ, “lame, crippled”), from Proto-Slavic *kucъ (“crippled, tailless”), of expressive origin. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Another possibility is derivation from late Koine Greek κοξός (koxós, “lame”), borrowed from Late Latin coxus (“lame, crippled”), from Latin coxa (“hip, thigh”), from Proto-Indo-European *koḱs-.[1]
