From Proto-Indo-European *tḱey- ‎(to settle). Cognates include Sanskrit क्षेति ‎(kṣeti), Avestan 𐬱𐬀𐬉𐬌𐬙𐬌 ‎(šaēiti) and, via Iranian borrowing, Old Armenian շէն ‎(šēn).
