From Proto-Indo-European *tḱey- (to settle). Cognates include Sanskrit क्षेति (kṣeti), Avestan 𐬱𐬀𐬉𐬌𐬙𐬌 (šaēiti) and, via Iranian borrowing, Old Armenian շէն (šēn).
