From Proto-Hellenic *pʰúyō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuHyéti, from *bʰuH- (to appear, become, rise up). Cognate with Old Armenian բոյս (boys, plant), Sanskrit भवति (bhavati), Avestan 𐬠𐬎(bu), Latin fuī (I was), Old English bēon (English be), Albanian bëj.
