Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *žьdati (to wait, to await), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰidʰ-. Compare Old High German gīt (avarice) and Old Prussian gēide (they are waiting). [1].
