[edit]Borrowed from Russian ста́вка (stávka, “stake, bet; rate, tariff, wage rate”), from Russian ста́вить (stávitʹ, “to set, to place”), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *stàviti. Compare also the older spellings ставкъ, стафка noted in Bulgarian dictionaries.
